Tourism in Situbondo
Situbondo is one of East Java’s tourism destination’s, blessed as it is with beautiful beaches, mountains, hills, forest, and historical sites dating from the Dutch colonial period. Mount Argopuro and Pasir Putih (White Sand) beach are two of Situbondo’s main tourist offerings.
Mount Argopuro, about 2,300 meters above sea level, is an active volcano and an animal reserve, because of its population of wild peacocks. The scenery is spectacular. Climbers can hike up nearby Rengganis peak, but be warned, it is three-day round trip. On the way you will pass a broad savannah (50 ha.) formerly a local Dutch military airport, the only airport located on the top of a mountain in Indonesia. You will also find lots of edelweiss growing wild on the upper slopes.
Pasir Putih Beach
Pasir Putih lies on Java’s north coast, 21 km. to the west of Situbondo’s city center. Lying between sea and mountain Pasir Putih combines maritime and nature pursuits, the pristine white sands contrasting beautifully with dark forest.
The Pasir Putih tourist resort is managed by the local government of Situbondo and provides a variety of activities such as diving, canoeing, swimming, and sailing. There are hotel accommodations, cafes, a convention hall for 1000 people, and a large parking area.
The Pasir Putih resort, in Bungatam district, is accessible by all means of transportation.
