passed away in Cipto Mangunkusumo
Hospital, Jakarta-Indonesia, on
Wednesday, 30 December 2009 at 18.45
hour local time.

Abdurrahman Wahid (known Gus Dur)
was born in Jombang, East Java,
Indonesia on 4 August 1940. He was
married with Mrs. Shinta Nuriyah and
have four (4) childrens : Alissa
Qotrunnada,
Zannuba Ariffah Chafsoh,
Anita Hayatunnufus and Inayah
Wulandari.
He was
a charismatic leader and
a
charitable
of the largest Indonesian Islamic
organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU),
whose membership is of more than
40 million followers. He was also a
founder a National Awakening Party.
Gus Dur had long been a national
popular leader
and
remains one of the most influential
politicians in Indonesia
and a
man who abolished the discriminative
rules dealing with Chinese when he
became a President of Indonesia. He
was the man who allowed Chinese
people to celebrate “Chinese New
Year” and express their cultures
and traditions freely. He is the man
who made Confucianism as an
“official religion” admitted by
the state besides Islam, Hinduism,
Buddhism, and Christianity (Catholic
and Protestant). Gus Dur had a very
moderate idea to bridge the Muslim
and Christian (interfaith) dialog.
Although since several years ago he
had been almost blind because of
stroke disease and had been to move
by wheelchair, he persist the
struggle of nonviolence, wrote
articles in mass media, attended
seminars, criticized the government,
demonstrate with the crowds,
advocated and assisted the victims
of human rights violation and so
forth. He did it for the sake of
achieving justice, peace, democracy,
liberty, prosperity and other
universal values.

In memory and honour of Gus Dur, the
Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia
in Manila is opening a Book of
Condolence for those who would like
to express their sympathy and share
this bereaved moment with Indonesian
community in the Philippines.
For signing a Book of Condolence is
from 4 December 2010 at
13.00 – 16.00 hour local time
and 5 & 6 December 2010 at
10.00 – 12.00 and 13.00
– 16.00 hour local time at the
Nusantara Hall (lobby) of the
Indonesian Embassy.
