EARTHQUAKE IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA
The earthquake measuring 6.2 on the richter-scale of May 27, 2006 caused damage to lives and properties in Yogyakarta City, about 450 kilometers Southeast of Jakarta, and surrounding areas. As a result of the magnitude of the disaster, more than 3500 people were killed and tens of thousands were injured and left homeless. Bantul, about 25 kilometers South Yogyakarta becomes the hardest-hit area. Prambanan Temple, Keraton/Sultanate Palace Museum and Adisucipto airport are also affected.
The Government of Indonesia welcomes the assistance from international community and opens the door to all humanitarian organizations and agencies.
