GENERAL ELECTIONS

9 April 2009

 

 

            Republic of Indonesia will hold its General Election on April 9, 2009. Forty four (44) political parties vie for the 560 seats in the House of Representatives including the 3 major parties namely: the Democratic Party; the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle; and the Golkar Party. Six (6) of which are local parties campaigning for elections in Aceh as part of the 2005 peace accord between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Indonesian embassies and consulate offices around the globe will simultaneously hold an election for the absentee voters.

 

            The general election will be followed by the country’s second direct presidential and vice-presidential election slated on July 8, 2009. Parliamentary elections are held every five years.

 

Indonesian Embassy in Manila will be the venue to more than 800 registered Indonesian voters living in the National Capital Region and nearby provinces to cast their ballots. Voting will start at 7am until 3pm and counting of the ballots will follow soon after. Media representatives who would like to observe the afore-mentioned event may contact:
