Qualifies as a Seven Wonder of the
World

The process of selecting one of the
Seven Wonders of the World came to
the final phase yesterday. About 261
nominees from 222 countries have
passed this round. These nominees
can be voted for through
www.new7wonders.com.
Indonesia's Komodo National Park is
among the 261 nominees for the
national park category. Indonesia's
Coral Triangle has also been
nominated for the sea view category.
Billions of people are expected to
vote to get 77 nominees for the
semi-finals. The seven natural
wonders will be added to the seven
human creation wonders selected 18
months ago.
"We are inviting everyone in the
world to be actively involved in
showing their appreciation of our
nature by joining this amazing
website," said Tia Viering,
spokesperson for the Seven Wonders
of the World campaign.
The Switzerland-based foundation has
collected 441 nominees through the
internet since the selection process
was opened in 2007. The voting will
be conducted until July 7.
Registration on the website is to
avoid double registration by one
person.
Previously, around 100 million
people voted for seven human
creation wonders. The winners were:
The Giza Pyramids (Egypt), the Great
Wall of China, the Taj Mahal
(India), Petra (Jordan), the Statue
of Jesus (Brazil), Machu Picchu
(Peru) and the Chichen Itza Pyramids
(Mexico).
The Komodo National Park is located
between the East Nusa and West Nusa
Tenggara regions. The national park
consists of three big islands,
namely Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as
well few other smaller islands.
There are also 11 mountains or hills
in the park, including the highest,
Mount Satalibo.
The park is 603 square kilometers in
size, while the total area where the
park is located is about 1.817
kilometer square. The park was
established in 1980 to protect the
komodo and its habitat. Later,
general flora and fauna was added.
In 1986, the national park was named
as one of UNESCO's World Heritage
