Komodo Park Qualifies as a Seven Wonder of the World

TEMPO Interactive, Geneva: The process of selecting one of the Seven Wonders of the World came to the final phase yesterday. About 261 nominees from 222 countries have passed this round. These nominees can be voted for through www.new7wonders.com.

Indonesia's Komodo National Park is among the 261 nominees for the national park category. Indonesia's Coral Triangle has also been nominated for the sea view category.

Billions of people are expected to vote to get 77 nominees for the semi-finals. The seven natural wonders will be added to the seven human creation wonders selected 18 months ago.

"We are inviting everyone in the world to be actively involved in showing their appreciation of our nature by joining this amazing website," said Tia Viering, spokesperson for the Seven Wonders of the World campaign.

The Switzerland-based foundation has collected 441 nominees through the internet since the selection process was opened in 2007. The voting will be conducted until July 7. Registration on the website is to avoid double registration by one person.

Previously, around 100 million people voted for seven human creation wonders. The winners were: The Giza Pyramids (Egypt), the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal (India), Petra (Jordan), the Statue of Jesus (Brazil), Machu Picchu (Peru) and the Chichen Itza Pyramids (Mexico).

The Komodo National Park is located between the East Nusa and West Nusa Tenggara regions. The national park consists of three big islands, namely Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well few other smaller islands. There are also 11 mountains or hills in the park, including the highest, Mount Satalibo.

The park is 603 square kilometers in size, while the total area where the park is located is about 1.817 kilometer square. The park was established in 1980 to protect the komodo and its habitat. Later, general flora and fauna was added. In 1986, the national park was named as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Site. (AP/ERWIN)
