BATIK DAY

The Republic of Indonesia has one good reason to celebrate amidst its onerous situation due to the earthquake that recently hit the island of Sumatra a couple of days ago.

2 OCTOBER 2009 – is dubbed a “BATIK Day” by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in recognition of the UNESCO’s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declaration of BATIK as Cultural Heritage of Humanity from Indonesia. The inauguration was done during the UNESCO’s 4th Meeting of Intergovernmental Committee of Intangible Heritage in Abu Dhabi.

President SBY, while on official trip to the quake-stricken island of Sumatra, called on his countrymen to wear BATIK on October 2 to proudly address the distinction given.

The Officials and Local staff of Indonesian Embassy in Manila headed by H.E. Ambassador Irzan Tandjung and his wife, Mme. Juliana Carolina Tandjung, who are just as proud, adhere to President SBY’s appeal. Supported by the Embassy’s officials and local staff, they visited the office Mr. GION V. GOUNET, ELLD - UN Ambassador of Goodwill in the Philippines to pay their courtesy and gratitude.
