onerous situation due to the
earthquake that recently hit the
island of Sumatra a couple of days
ago.
2 OCTOBER 2009 – is dubbed a “BATIK
Day” by President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono in recognition of the
UNESCO’s (United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization) declaration of BATIK
as Cultural Heritage of Humanity
from Indonesia. The inauguration was
done during the UNESCO’s 4th
Meeting of Intergovernmental
Committee of Intangible Heritage in
Abu Dhabi.
President SBY, while on official
trip to the quake-stricken island of
Sumatra, called on his countrymen to
wear BATIK on October 2 to proudly
address the distinction given.

by H.E. Ambassador Irzan Tandjung
