Painting
Several
others followed in his footsteps, but is
was not until decades later that Indonesia
could boast a number of painters whose work
could stand comparison with those of their
colleagues in Europe and the Americas.
Nowadays,
Indonesia can boast of having many talented
college trained painters of almost
any school, as well as some older artist
whose work has won international acclaim.
One of the most famous of modern Indonesian
painters were the late Affandi and Basuki
Abdullah, whose works are sought by collectors
in many countries.
Leaving
aside Balis traditional painting styles
for a while, it can be said that the art
of painting as it is understood in the west
is a relative newcomer to Indonesia. Considered
to be the pioneer of modern painting in
this country is Raden Saleh (1816
1880 ), a naturalist painter who received
his artistic training in the Netherlands.
