art of carving and sculpting, using
a wide variety of materials ranging
from wood to bone and ivory, has
always been an important part of
the Indonesian artistic heritage.
This art, too, may have its origins
in the ancient religious beliefs
of the people. Ancestrl and guardian
statues are still erected to this
day in some remote parts of the
archipelago
Today,
important centers of the wood carver’s
art typically follow traditional
patterns for the ornamentation
of homes; furniture and other objects.
Bali’s carvings and sculpture
often display the great innovative
and creative spirit of the people.
